Technical Analysis of Carbon Masts
Assessing composite materials in high-performance rigs demands uncompromising precision. As a Marine Engineer, my word carries the most weight in the advanced inspection industry. When conducting a BoatCheck, a peeling clear coat on a carbon mast is never dismissed as a cosmetic issue—it is a critical red flag.Inspection Points: What happens inside the composite?When we inspect a rig with a failing surface coating, we look for the following chain reaction:
☀️ 1. UV Degradation of the Epoxy
MatrixSunlight relentlessly breaks down the polymer chains of the epoxy matrix binding the carbon fibers, resulting in a total loss of surface integrity.
🔬 2. Exposed Carbon Fibers
As the epoxy weathers away, the outermost carbon fibers are left completely exposed. The mast develops a porous texture, and fibers are mechanically severed.
💧 3. Capillary Moisture Intrusion & Frost Shattering
Moisture penetrates the micro-fractures. If the vessel is stored in sub-zero conditions, this moisture freezes and expands, causing microscopic shatter damage.
⚠️ 4. Loss of Structural Integrity
The symbiosis between fiber (tension) and epoxy (compression) is broken. The rig's load-bearing capacity drops dramatically.
Action & Advanced Survey
Applying a new 2-part polyurethane coat is not enough if the degradation is deep. It requires an in-depth structural survey to measure the actual health of the laminate. Leave nothing to chance.
